It’s time to make palliative care everyone’s business

Warrigal Care is using this National Palliative Care Week (19 – 25 May 2013) as an opportunity to remind everyone in the community about the importance of palliative care and asking them to think about how they can make palliative care their own business. Palliative care is about supporting people to live as well as possible until they die, and also supporting the person’s loved ones and carers through the process. It’s important to make it the business of everyone in our community.
“One way you can do this is to have a conversation with your family and loved ones. We know that most people do have preferences about how they would like to be cared for at the end of life, however, they are not sharing these ideas with the people closest to them. It’s important to let them know what’s important to you and how you would like to be cared for,” said Warrigal Care CEO Mark Sewell.
Warrigal Care Warilla is holding a workshop for resident family members and representatives of residents living with palliative illness. It will feature guest presenters from Port Kembla Hospital who specialise in palliative care as well as Warrigal Care’s own Palliative Care Nurse Consultants Jane Mahony and Sallie Fredericks.
