Everybody has a Story

In what started as an exchange of emails with a young friend, Mrs Barbara Baird, a Warrigal resident has published her memoirs. A wonderful little book, My Story, contains many personal tales and wonderful photographs of life in Leadville, Katoomba, Cowra, Sydney and Kiama. As a memento it is something incredibly precious for her family to treasure.

Neither Tom nor I expected to reach the year 2000, yet we were both still alive and ready to welcome in the turn of the century. We did this with our friends, John and Judy at their place and a few others of our age group. We couldn’t let this special event go by as we had done with other New Year’s Eves in the past few years.

2000 also saw my 80th birthday in June. I didn’t want a party, so the kids arranged a family luncheon at Barry and Bev’s Figtree home. That was very enjoyable and I always welcomed family get togethers because we rarely got to see our grandchildren, and by now, great-grandchildren, otherwise. None lived close to us. To celebrate my birthday, Tom and I had booked a holiday trip down through Australia’s red centre, flying to Darwin and joining a tour south to Adelaide and back to Sydney in July. I wondered how we would be able to handle the various activities and walks associated with the tour. We were the two oldest people in the group. I was pleased that we were both able to do all the base walks but didn’t try to climb anything. I loved this trip; the interior is so spectacular and interesting and tugs at the heartstrings so that you feel you must go back. Unfortunately, that wasn’t a possibility for us. I have many wonderful memories of that trip stored in my mind.
